‘Our Smelter’ Recorder & Flinders News newspaper supplement

Port Pirie Smelter is working with the community to achieve the best possible health outcomes. The Company, with The Recorder and The Flinders News local newspapers, joined with the community to produce a 12 page lift-out to illustrate and explain how this is being achieved.

We acknowledge ‘The Recorder’ for use of stories written by them, published on this website.

Healthy Eating Brochure

Port Pirie Smelter in conjunction with the Environmental Health Service and Port Pirie Regional Health Service dietician produced a ‘Healthy Eating’ Brochure, designed to create awareness to parents and children of the importance that good diet plays in reducing the absorption of lead. ‘Healthy Eating Reduces Blood Lead in Children’ was the main message and was supported by illustrations and easy to follow suggestions to improve diet. The brochures were initially produced and handed out at the Port Pirie Combined Service Clubs Christmas Pageant from the Port Pirie Smelter float.

The Port Pirie Smelter pageant float was themed ‘Healthy Eating’ with a group of children parading placquards saying ‘Healthy Eating, the way to GO’, ‘Junk Food, Junk Food, just say NO’. The tenby10 healthy eating rap army, escorted by 2 motorbikes flying the tenby10 flag, chanted out a healthy eating tune whilst Healthy Eating brochures, Healthy snacks, tenby10 balloons and promotional products were handed out to the pageant crowd. The brochures continue to be distributed by the Smelter, Environmental Health Service and the Port Pirie Regional Health Service to those at risk with the lead in blood issue.
