What is the tenby10 project?
"The goal we are committed to achieving is for at least 95% of our children aged 0 to 4 to have a blood lead level below ten micrograms per decilitre of blood (the first ten in tenby10) by the end of 2010 (the second ten in tenby10)."
The tenby10 project is all about reducing lead contamination in Port Pirie, a serious environmental and health issue that affects both the Smelter and the wider community. The focus of tenby10 is reducing the blood lead levels in Port Pirie's children, which is vital to our children's health, not to mention the future sustainability of the Smelter as well as our community.
Although much has been done over the years to reduce lead contamination, by 2006 it was clear that much more needed to be done, and quickly, to ensure a safe and productive future for our city. In recognition of this, the Department of Health, the Port Pirie Regional Council, the Environment Protection Authority and the Smelter agreed to formalise their partnership to lower children's blood lead levels. That's when the tenby10 project was born.
